HomeworkScienceChemistry → Solids, Liquids and Gases

  1. Solids melt to form liquid and then evaporate to form gas.
  2. Gases condense to form liquid and Freeze to form solid.

A Solid A Liquid A Gas
A solid has particles that vibrate about a fixed position. It has a constant mass, volume and shape. A liquid contains particles that move around more freely. It has a constant mass and volume but changes shape. A gas contains particles that move around at great speed. It has a fixed mass but changes in volume and shape.

  • Solids - Often strong, hard to compress, have a fixed shape, have particles in regular patterns that are closely packed and strongly bonded (linked together).
  • Liquids - Little strength, spread out to fill any container, only mix slowly, have particles weakly held together, widely spread apart.
  • Gases - Easily compressed, have no strength, no fixed shape, mix quite easily, spread out quickly, its particles are widely spread apart and sometimes bump into each other. They are freely moving.
