What are bones?

Bone is one of the hardest tissues in the body. It is formed from tough fibres and cells that are hardened with calcium and other salts. Bones are as strong as steel but are also very light. Many bones have a hollow tube inside that is filled with a spongy material called bone marrow.

What are joints?

Joints are methods of connecting bones so that we can move parts of our body in different directions. There are three types of joints and they each have a different function.

What are the three types of joint?

  • Ball and Socket - Movement in all directions. I.e. Shoulder, hip.
  • Hinge - Movement in one direction only. I.e. Shoulder, hip.
  • Plane - Joints are made up of many smaller bones whose flat surfaces slide over one another. I.e. Wrist, ankle.
